Another song about Erie Canal and Western New York history, "The Lumber Shovers' Song" concerns the Tonawandas men who loaded lumber from Great Lakes vessels onto canal boats for points east on the Erie Canal. Although the work was hard, and often fraught with strikes and unrest, this song imagines an ideal day on the docks, where everything goes right, and all feel the satisfaction of a job well done.
