Songs that speak truth to power.
The Buffalo Music Coalition and Yellow Jack present a special live concert featuring some of America’s most vital songs, performed by some of Western New York’s finest folk musicians.
Written or performed by Woody Guthrie—the restless American poet, troubadour and chronicler—these songs gave voice to working people, wanderers and ordinary Americans trying to make their way through hard times. More than eighty years later, they remain funny, angry, stubborn, compassionate and all-too-relevant.

Yellow Jack & the Ribbon of Highway Singers
Yellow Jack plays Americana and folk with an ear for the song history of Western New York and the Erie Canal region. For this concert, the band opens the Woody Guthrie songbook open wide.
The expanded Ribbon of Highway Singers brings in Chris Jones of the Skiffle Minstrels, Captain Tom of Captain Tom & the Hooligans, Tony Petrocelli of Talking Dead Heads and Kathryn Koch of The Healing Committee. Watch for other second set sit-ins!

Fiddle & guitar duo
Sally Schaefer & Tyler Bagwell
Buffalo-based folk duo Sally Schaefer (fiddle, vocals) and Tyler Bagwell (guitar, vocals) breathe fire into folk songs old and new, including a treasure trove of Americana, Irish, and Erie Canal music. Sally is a well-known ethnomusicologist and musician around the Western New York area, appearing with and recording for various projects in an array of genres. Tyler is an award-winning historian and songwriter with a busker’s voice in search of couplets within the notion that “history rhymes.” Together, they invent and reinvent songs highlighting events, people, and places of local and national note. Captain Tom
The accordion-wielding frontman of Captain Tom & the Hooligans turns old-world tradition into a Buffalo party: polka, Celtic folk, American roots, ska and Eastern European music played with nerve and good humor. Here he strips the sound down for a solo pass through Woody’s catalog.

Tyler Westcott
A Buffalo poet, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist rooted in folk, country blues and traditional jazz. Westcott founded Folkfaces in 2011 and brings the easy authority of a lifelong song collector—voice, guitar, banjo and stories all in the same weathered case.

Yellow Jack opens and closes the night with the Ribbon of Highway Singers. Between those sets: solo songs from Tyler Westcott and Captain Tom, plus Sally Schaefer and Tyler Bagwell on fiddle, guitar and voice.
Every artist on the bill comes to this music out of affection and admiration for Woody Guthrie’s songs—and for the democratic, neighborly act of singing them together.
